Humanity Touch Champions Inclusion Through PWD Survey in Arua: Advancing Rights-Based Social Protection and Livelihood Resilience

Posted by Categories: General

In a bold effort to amplify the voices of marginalized communities, Humanity Touch conducted a comprehensive survey across Arua City and District to assess the lived realities of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs). The survey aimed to identify key disability categories, uncover the challenges PWDs face, and gather insights on their preferred interventions for support. The findings were both sobering and inspiring—revealing a landscape of resilience amid systemic exclusion, and a clear call for inclusive, rights-based solutions.

The survey categorized disabilities into five main groups: physical, hearing, visual, intellectual, and multiple disabilities. Across these categories, PWDs reported facing persistent barriers to education, employment, health care, and accessible infrastructure. Many also highlighted the emotional toll of stigma, discrimination, and social isolation. Yet, despite these challenges, participants expressed a strong desire for empowerment through vocational skills training, start-up capital for income-generating activities, assistive devices, inclusive education, psychosocial support, and robust advocacy to combat discrimination.

These insights will directly inform the development of a livelihood proposal under Humanity Touch, aimed at promoting economic resilience and social inclusion for PWDs in the region. The proposal will prioritize community-based vocational training, access to adaptive technologies, and inclusive service delivery models that reflect the voices and aspirations of PWDs themselves. By centering their needs and rights, Humanity Touch reaffirms its commitment to building a just and inclusive society where no one is left behind.

This activity aligns strongly with Humanity Touch’s strategic focus on Rights-Based Social Protection, advancing social justice and equity for vulnerable populations. It also contributes to Eco-Inclusive Livelihoods & Resilience Building, recognizing that sustainable development must include pathways for self-reliance and dignity for all.

Importantly, this initiative contributes directly to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

  • SDG 1: No Poverty – by promoting livelihoods and reducing economic vulnerability
  • SDG 4: Quality Education – through advocacy for inclusive learning opportunities
  • SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth – by supporting skills training and access to employment
  • SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities – by addressing discrimination and promoting inclusion
  • SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions – by advancing rights-based social protection and justice

The survey not only highlighted systemic gaps—it illuminated the potential for transformative change when communities are heard, respected, and empowered to lead their own futures. Through this work, Humanity Touch continues to champion inclusion, protection, and opportunity for every individual, regardless of ability.
